San Sebastian is a very popular saint and patron of the city of Rio de Janeiro, giving its name to the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro. This summer in Paraty will have several cultural and sports activities in all weekends.

The Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios has been celebrated in the beautiful city of Paraty for 300 years. Every year, a 19th-century cedar wood statuette of the village's patron saint is carried around the historic district.

Like other Brazilian festivals, this one includes processions, masses and litanies, as well as places to eat and drink once the religious celebrations are over. Those who were born in Parati say that what makes it special is the community spirit.

Six feet tall, the statue is decorated with gold and silver earrings, chains and a crown and is so valuable that is normally kept under armed guard at the Museum of Sacred Art.
