FLIP Paraty International Literature Festival

FLIP- Paraty International Literature Festival

Paraty International Literary Festival - FLIP 2011 will be held from July 6th to 10th

About the FLIP 2011

Paraty FLIP 2011

The first International Literary Festival of Paraty in 2003 put Brazil, and Paraty, on the map of international literary festivals. That festival included world-renowned authors as Julian Barnes, Eric Hobsbawm, Don DeLillo  and Hanif Kureishi. Over the years Flip has become one of the main events of its type, characterized by the importance of its guest authors, the enthusiasm of the public and the hospitality of the colonial village of Paraty. For five days, Flip holds some 200 events, which include debates, shows, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings and school presentations. There are also extra activities in addition to the main programme, which also includes Casa da Culture, FlipZone and Flipinha.

Flip - Main Programme

The main programme of the FLIP is an opening conference and 20 round table discussions featuring guests from the different backgrounds (filmmakers, writers, cartoonists, historians, journalists and artists, among others). It happens in the "Authors´ Tent", an auditorium set next to the sea. Each event is accompanied by simultaneous translation and it is broadcasted live in the Screen Tent, which seats 1,400, and also by live feed on the internet.

Flip - Casa da Cultura

Flip - Casa da Cultura is a parallel and complementary programme which is held at the Paraty Casa da Cultura (House of Culture) and at other venues throughout the town. The programme is set by the Flip curatorial team and includes pre and post-launch theatre readings, film screenings, exhibitions and debates.

FlipZona

There is also an exclusive literary programme for teenagers: the FlipZona. This part of the FLIP aims to generate interest of youngsters for literature.

Flipinha

Alongside this initiative is the Flipinha (Little FLIP), a special programme for children. During the FLIP, the "Little FLIP tent" is the meeting point for all the activities carried out during the year on the FLIP´s educational plan. This involves a educational participative process of reading policies and Paraty´s material and immaterial heritage valorisation.

FLIP Tributes: Manuel Bandeira
Pausar

Every year, the festival pays tribute to one Brazilian writer. On previous editions of FLIP the homage has been for Gilberto Freyre, Manuel Bandeira, Machado de Assis, Nelson Rodrigues, Jorge Amado, Vinicius de Moraes, Guimarães Rosa and Clarice Lispector. This year is the turn of one of Brazil´s most renowned avant-garde poets, Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954)

He is considered the most innovative of the Brazilian modernists. Besides having been a precursor of the Tropicália movement and of the "marginal poetry" of the 70s, de Andrade wrote three major manifestos: the Pau-Brasil Poetry Manifesto (1924), Pau Brasil (1925) and the Anthropophagic Manifesto (1928). He also introduced Brazilian literature to experimental prose with Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar (1924).

This tribute will address the periods of the famous "Week of Modern Art of ?22", Anthropophagy and Pau-Brasil nativism, but it will go further than that, revealing other aspects of the author. De Andrade´s career as poet and essayist and the impact of his work within the formation of Brazilian literature are issues that will generate intense debates at Flip, make sure to get a seat!
